Landscapes in Boise, Idaho’s High-Desert Climate

The Specific Conditions of Boise, Idaho (and Surrounding Areas)

Boise, Idaho sits in a high-desert climate that presents both challenges and opportunities for homeowners looking to create beautiful outdoor spaces. Hot, dry summers, cold winters, alkaline soils, and fluctuating precipitation levels mean that successful landscape design in Boise requires thoughtful planning and local expertise. At GreenPen Landscape Design, I love to create landscapes that not only look great but also thrive in the Treasure Valley’s conditions. And it should be said that this doesn’t necessarily mean a xeriscape, though it is certainly an option. Being thoughtful about the orientation and location of the site, microclimates, soils, and choosing the right plant for the right place can expand the planting options — giving you a verdant landscape or lush garden, if that’s your goal.

One potential mistake homeowners can make, especially if relocating from a different area, is relying on designs or plant palettes better suited for wetter or milder climates. Boise regularly experiences summer temperatures in the 90s - 100s, combined with low humidity and limited rainfall. Without proper plant selection (and planting them in the right place), and without efficient irrigation planning, landscapes can struggle. Generally, local nurseries do a good job of only stocking plants that will grow well in our area, so that is a help from the start. These local conditions don’t have to mean a plain or limited landscape and garden. We’re fortunate to be able to grow quite a wide variety of plants in our USDA Zone 7 (7a/6b depending on your location in the valley, if you want to get specific).

Landscape Design Considerations in Boise, Idaho

Thoughtful landscape design begins with understanding the site. Sun exposure, slope, soil composition, and drainage all play a major role in how a landscape performs. In areas like Boise’s foothills, wind exposure and elevation changes add another layer of complexity. GreenPen Landscape Design evaluates these factors during the design process to ensure long-term success (with proper irrigation, some seasonal maintenance, and a little care being required of the homeowners 😊).

Water efficiency is another key element of high-desert landscaping. Using drought-tolerant plants, grouping plants by water needs, and incorporating efficient irrigation systems helps reduce water usage while maintaining a healthy landscape. This approach not only supports sustainability but also keeps utility costs manageable (if you use city water for irrigation) during Boise’s long summer months. It should be noted here that a little care from homeowners in the area of irrigation and water usage will go a long way. There are a few instances when higher sprinkler times may be needed (example - establishing a newly laid sod lawn) but, through observation throughout the season, the right balance can be found that will keep your landscape properly watered and thriving without overusing a critical resource.

Hardscape elements such as patios, retaining walls, and pathways can also play an important role in Boise landscapes, just like anywhere else. Integrating properly designed and installed hardscapes can help manage slopes, control erosion, and create functional outdoor living areas that can be enjoyed throughout the year. Materials and construction methods are selected with freeze-thaw cycles in mind, ensuring longevity through many Idaho winters.

Ultimately, landscapes designed for Boise’s high-desert climate are about balance — between beauty, resilience, form and function. With a locally informed approach, homeowners can enjoy outdoor spaces that feel good, look good, and remain relatively low-maintenance over time (unless you’re like me and prefer a high-maintenance garden because it’s a hobby you enjoy 😊). Let’s connect and explore the possibilities in your outdoor space!
